April 17th, 2020 marked a day that Gigi and the Bryant family had been looking forward to for years, but was celebrated a lot different and way sooner then it was planned. The 17th was draft day, a day that players wait their whole life for, just to hear their name called. Gigi planned on being in that position one day, as her father mentioned numerous times how skilled she was at a young age. I mean, her father and coach were Kobe Bryant, I can imagine it came pretty naturally.
This lifelong dream came to an end after the loss of Kobe and Gigi Bryant, along with other close friends, on January 26th, 2020. As the whole world was rocked with sadness after the horrible helicopter accident, players and organizations looked to somehow carry on the legacy of those affected and the Bryant family.
The WNBA found a way to show their love and support towards those affected in the helicopter crash by naming Alyssa Altobelli, Payton Chester, and of course, Gigi Bryant, as honorary draft selections to start the 2020 draft. As most people know or have heard, both Kobe and Gigi loved the WNBA and looked for ways to bring it more attention. They were always spotted at games during the season, the reason being that Gigi wanted to leave the same legacy in the WNBA as her dad left in the NBA. Unfortunately, Gigi will never have the opportunity to leave that same mark, but her, along with her father will never be forgotten.
